Brick pavers are one of the most requested materials we install across Broward County — and one of the most misunderstood. Homeowners often assume pavers are simply “the expensive option,” without knowing what actually separates a paver driveway or patio from a concrete one, or how each holds up under South Florida’s heat, rain, and salt air. What Makes Brick Pavers Different

Unlike a poured concrete slab, which cures as one continuous surface, pavers are individual interlocking units set into a compacted base and bedding layer of sand, then locked together with joint sand. That segmented design is the source of most of their practical advantages — and a couple of trade-offs worth knowing before you choose a material.

Why Pavers Hold Up Well in South Florida

Florida’s climate is hard on hardscaping: intense UV exposure, heavy seasonal rain, humidity, and for coastal properties, salt air. Pavers handle a few of these conditions particularly well:

Individual units flex instead of cracking. Florida’s sandy, shifting soil and the seasonal wet/dry cycle can cause ground movement that cracks a solid concrete slab. Because pavers are independent units on a flexible base, minor ground shifts show up as slight settling in one or two pavers — not a crack running across the whole surface.

Damaged sections are repairable, not replaceable. If a paver cracks, stains, or sinks, we can lift and replace that individual unit without redoing the whole driveway or patio. A damaged section of concrete generally means patching (which rarely matches the original color and texture) or replacing the full slab.

Permeable joints help with drainage. Sand-filled joints between pavers allow some water to drain through the surface rather than sheeting off entirely, which can help during Florida’s intense summer downpours.

Brick Pavers vs. Stamped Concrete vs. Travertine

All three materials work well in Broward County; the right choice depends on your budget, maintenance tolerance, and the look you want.

Brick pavers offer the widest range of colors, patterns, and textures, and are the easiest of the three to repair piece-by-piece. They do require periodic joint-sand replenishment and, over time, re-sanding and resealing to keep the surface locked and the color even.

Stamped concrete is a poured, textured, and colored surface designed to mimic the look of pavers, stone, or wood at a lower material cost, with a more seamless appearance and less joint maintenance — but it cracks and stains as one continuous surface rather than in repairable sections, and cracks are harder to disguise. Travertine is a natural stone that stays noticeably cooler underfoot in direct sun — a real advantage around a pool deck — and has a higher-end, more uniform natural look, typically at a higher material cost than pavers or stamped concrete. Where We Install Brick Pavers

Pavers work well for driveways, front walkways, pool decks, and patios. For driveways specifically, proper base preparation matters more than the surface material itself — a paver driveway installed on an inadequately compacted base will shift and settle no matter how good the pavers are. We excavate, install and compact a proper aggregate base, then set and compact the pavers before sanding and sealing the joints, so the finished surface performs the way it’s supposed to for years, not just for the first season.

Paver joints benefit from periodic re-sanding as sand naturally washes out over time, and a quality sealer helps resist staining, inhibits weed growth in the joints, and keeps the color from fading under South Florida sun.
